My Elgrand Camper Sound System 5 Amp 10 Speaker 2 Sub Budget Build 2260 Watts RMS Total Amp Output

The opps message is really starting to get my goat now, must have been going on for the best part of 2 years now.

Took me best part of an hour to get this message to post and had to keep on taking bits out adding them backing in and editing so that what I wanted was in the message with the worry that it was going to get lost completly at any minute, checked the spelling 3 times and it still came back with spelling mistakes.

Seems like anything with more than a few sentences or a couple of pictures it does not want to know and even with all the long winded ways around it is getting worse.

Is it just me, should I just post loads of shorter massages to say the same things.

Anyway

A bit of a update.

I have had my Hernia operation on Wednesday and all good.

Spent a total of 12 hours in hospital with the op taking nearly 2 hours.

Due to having a stroke and a heart attack in the last few years they had decided that they would do the operation under general antiseptic.

Still very sore and tired and have spent virtually all the last 4 days mainly in bed taking pain killers so not done anything to my Elgrand.

One thing I have decided though is that I am going to build a wifi zone in my Elgrand while I am at it partly due to having a brand new sealed Linkdys EA8300 that I bought for £25 a few months ago to extend my home wifi into the back garden in conjuction with a used Linksys EA9500 that I bought at the same time which I paid £36 for but my wife has decided that she does not want it on show and would live with having the weaker signal from the EA9500 in the garden which even though it is the more powerful of the 2 is further away and has to transmit the signal throgh some fairly thch walls so thought I might as well get some use from it

Both of these are only Wifi 5 not the newer Wifi 6 or 7 but this makes no difference as all my kit is only Wifi5 and I have no intention of replacing it for quite a few years at least so would get no benefit from the newer tech

They are both triband with 8 and 4 external antennas respectivly and are very highly rated for there signal strength both being expensive routers a few years ago

I have been researching how I can use it in my Elgrand and it seems to be fairly straight forward with a combination of the Linksys EA8300 and new external magnetic removable antenas on the roof of my van wired directly to a used Huawei B525s-23a router which I wlll then use a ethernet cable to wire to the Linkys for use as an extender.

Was thinking of running the cable from the l antennas through the same gland that i used to run the cable for the solar panels but think it would be more trouble than it would be worth as it is not just the cable that needs to be run in but also the 2 SMA connectors which would then make it really tight and the l antennas would also then need to be permently fixed to the roof and as we mainly have the tailgate up when we are away would be no great hardship to put the antenas on the roof with there magnets and connect to the Huawwei although I may look for an exstension cable so that i can leave the cable permently in the back of the Huawei and have it running to the the unit at the top and then being able to plug in direct rather than going through the cupboard door.

Might think of adding a small 20 inch tv in future if I can find a used one for a decent price as I have a bit of room on the camper units up high in the living zone that I could use to mount it and once the wifi was in should be fairly straight forward to connect it to the Linksys with a firetick which I have in my stash

Initatail thoughts are that although sound qaulity may drop a bit from the head unit is that as long as the tv had a audio out I could also use this through the Infinty amp which is pwering the living zone and the boshmans in the units and rear doors although not intending to do this at present should not cost to much or be too difficult to do in furture
I have gone for this one as although not quite so powerful as the ewer Huawei mode that I could have used when used in conjunction with the Linksys this will make no difference as it will be Linksys that is doing the work of sending the signal.

They are also cheaper and rather than being white are black and gold which matches my van and units better.

Just need to check that I can get this kit into the only remaing cupbord that i have a available alhough i think it would be possible to put the Linkskys in one cupbourd and Huawei in the space above although it might then need to lie flat so not ideal but if needed would be possible.

This should give me a very strong stream to my Samsung tablets anything up to 75 feet away from the open tailgate which will keep my wife happy as she can watch all her soaps on catchup sat in the sun on her tablet rather than her phone. and will also provide a far better signal inside the van as the signal will not be dropping as it would on a phone due the vans body and roof

Should only cost about £50 or so as I already have the Linksys so although this pushes my budget up slightly will still be well below the £1100 mark in total. as the used Huawe and new antennae or about £45 in total and if I then do add a tv in future I will not be looking to pay anymore tha around £100 for it and as I already kave a spare firesick will stil bel keeping my total bufget not much more than £1100.

This could also possibly give me the option to play the FLAC files that I have stored on my laptop through Foobar2000 direct through zone 2 and may be also zone3 if i also wired it in through the headphone out but not certain whether this would be any real benefit over using the JVC head units outputs with the usb stick I have with them on so will not bother initially but perhaps something to try in furture.

Probably the better option sound wise may be to try to put foobar onto the JVC head unit direct but as this will be only accessible direct from the tailgate zone will not be so convient. Either way more thoughts for the furture,

Looks like the best option for me for a data only sim as we don't use the van that much would be 1p mobile which is powered by the EE network as i could buy a 10gb package which is valid for 7 days and only costs £3 as we only use the van for camping twice a year or so so total cost would only be about £6 for the sim

This at medium quality would give my wife approx 14 hours of catch up TV over the 7 days although what you don't use is lost.

Picture of the Linksys EA8300 that I have

Linkys EA8300.jpg

Have also decided that while the door cards are off I am going to recover the cream panel in the middle of the doors in the black baby ostrich material that I have used for part of the rear bench seats as I have quite a lot of this left and think that it would go in a lot better with black seats I now have fitted that replaced my original cream Rider seats and the DAD Garson VIP table that will also be using it on which is very nearly finished now.

Will also think what I can do to the upper and lower parts of the seats and may think about looking for some yellow seude to do these in

and might even buy enough to also do the upper parts of the dash up to the black dash mat that I have bought as I would like to do something to the dash but am not a fan of of wraps.

Also a few more bits from Aliexpress have turned up

Aliexpress Bits.jpg

In with these bits are a pair of 6.5 universal spacers for the front doors which look to be a perfect fit for the mounting holes on the Elgrand and at about £3 for the pair are considerably less than the specific spacer covers sold for the Elgrand in the UK which seem to about £20 up

Also bought from the same seller a pair of speaker extensions for about £2 as I am thinking I may cut out the Elgrand speaker grill and mount the speakers on top of the existing grill with it's own covers that they came with if I can make it work as I like that this would then allow the orange cone on the bassface to show through and would match the SPLX subwoofer in the tailgate zone.

Included in with this delivery are a couple of Ryoba pull cut saws as a few of the cuts to the units will need to be done in situ rather then dismantle the whole conversion and I remember from when we installed the units in the first place even with a router we had to go really careful or the veneer would crack and splinter

Will most likely undercut very slightly and finish of with a hand sandpaper as even though it will take a bit longer is preferable to having to recut a whole panel and even though I have over half a sheet left plus some decent size offcuts would prefer this rather than chancing running out as if I had to buy more it was £160 per sheet plus delivery when I bought it 7 years ago so likely more now

Also included in with these are a new pair of foam ear pads for my Grado500 pros

Hoping that my bruising will have gone down enough in the next few days so that I can start getting it all fitted.

I have decided that the best way to do this will be to get the JVC head unit, all the amps, speakers, tweeters and crossovers and enclosures for speakers and subs etc fitted in place first as they pretty much need to go where I have planned for them and do the wiring afterwards even if it means taking some of them out again to run the cables.

I have also relised that I do not have any binding posts to run the speaker cables into the enclosures that I am making for them so that I will need to spend a few pounds more and get these from Aliexpress, will get proper binding posts so that I can use bayonets with them not the cheap and horrible spring loaded jobs which typically will only take 16 gauge wire.

Bit more work as the enclosures have to cut to fit them but in my opinion well worth doing as they will then accept my speaker cable gauge without trying to trim it to make it fit.

I do have quite a few bayonet plugs in my stash but they are mainly mismatched although I will look first before buying any to check what I have.

The forged Tanei-sha wheels that I bought for my grandson for him have now arrived from Japan and are stunning and weigh next to nothing which means that the centre consul for between the front seats should also be here soon as this was shipped about 4 weeks after the wheels.

They have very minor curbing right on the outside edges to a couple of them but this is only to the paintwork and has not damaged the alloy underneath so may look to have them refinished with a black pinstripe around the outside rim as I think this will suit the carbon centre caps perfectly.

Should also be arriving soon are the Recaro Seat rails for the Recaro seats I have bought as they are in with the centre consul.

Also coming at about the same sort of time should be the DAD Garson front grill and the Sugra Speed lower control arm as these were shipped together and just after the seat rails and centre consul,

Will leave fitting these and the custom headlights which are virtually finished for now and concentrate on the interior as hoping to get a bit of ramp time at the garage where my grandson works

Got to say it but delivery of the Tanei-sha wheels from Parcelforce from UK Customs to me was absolutely awful with them taking a total of 12 days to get the wheels to me with a couple of times being sent emails with the date they were supposed to be arriving and then not turning up after I paid the Import duty vat and there £25 fee for both parcels and then they left them on my neighbours drive.

Also after the last date that they were supposed to be dilivered I have not been able to get into the online tracking on either parcel

In contrast from the date I paid the proxys shipping in Japan for shipping by Japan Post they were loaded on the boat in 2 days.

All part of the reason why I will only use Royal Mail or or any of there sub companies as a least resort as I have found there service in general to be very poor and will go out of my way to find sellers who use other delivery companies although I do find Yodel not much better but are at least cheaper,

Having said all that I had the V55 form back from the DVLA for the Audi Q3 that I bought for my wife as I got the amount wrong for the tax as they have decided that they are rating it at a higher rate than a UK car even though it is exactly the same CO2. Only £20 a year more than a UK car so no big deal.

It took 8 days to get to me from Swansea 2nd class but when I returned it with a new cheque my wife dropped it in my local post office at 4.00 o/clock on Friday afternoon and the tracking shows it was received by the DVLA just after 6.00 on Saturday morning

This was sent special delivery so seems like there premium services are still good as this was a similar time frame to when it was sent the first time

Good news is that everything else is ticked being ok so should now be on the road soon.

Will hopefully update in a few days time as I start fitting the amps etc as long as my groin is up to lifting them in place

Epic build and thread Kev. One question, when they did your hernia, did they find a loose screw!😂
Hope the recovery goes as well as the build!

Feeling a lot lot better now and a lot more comfortable with virtually no pain

Have decided that I am not going to push it to fast on getting the amps and speakers etc in place as although I would have at least have liked them in place for Combe JDM on the 30th this might be pushing it a bit.

Instead am going to concentrate on getting my Elgrands exterior a bit up together for Coombe as this has been pretty neglected over the last couple of months and this will be a lot less strunous.

Also intend getting my wife's BMW 650i up together ready for sale as hopefully it looks like the Q3 will be UK registered soon.

Her 650i passed it's mot last week with 2 advisories one being front tyres perished so it is booked in for later today for 2 new tyres.

The other advisory was for the rear shocks being misted which I should have relised as it had the same advisory last year and I even went as far as buying a new pair of Bilsten B4's for it but never got round to fitting them

My grandson will fit these for me at the weekend as he has some ramp time.

I have also bought a used Logic7 amp as the one in the car packed up about 18 months ago which I traced to it being water damaged which seems to be quite common which did not really worry me as on the odd occasions I drive it as I would prefer to listen to the sound of the exhaust although my wife was a bit more put out with it not working and is well miffed that I am only sorting out now ready to sell it,

Bought a used Logic7 from ebay for £200 which is quite a bit cheaper than ones listed for the E93 or E94 that seem to go for more like £400 plus which was what put me off sorting out before

It looks in good nick with no water damage.where as when we took the original out the water damage was quite obvious.

Part of the reason I did not swop it out before was that I was under the impression that they were model specific which they are but have since having done a bit more research found that this is all within the software which can be changed and the amp its self is the same size with the same fixings and connections etc

Due to the Logic7 amp I have bought being for the E90 range it will not be plug and play although it should work to a degree as it's software will be set up for the far smaller cabin in the E90 and different speaker configurations

Logic7 From Google

While the actual silver box and the plugs are completely identical, the software inside it must be changed: [1]
  • The Problem: A standard 3-Series (like an E90 or E92) runs a 9-channel system powering 13 speakers. It has dedicated signals for rear-deck parcel shelf speakers.
  • Your E64 Convertible: Because it is a drop-top convertible, it does not have a rear parcel shelf. The E64 chassis logic map restricts the amplifier down to a 7-channel system powering 11 speakers. [1, 2]
If you just plug the 3-Series amplifier directly into your E64 without recoding it, the amplifier will try to send power to speakers that do not exist in your convertible cabin, and the actual side panel speakers you do have will sound completely flat, quiet, or heavily distorted.

Looks like I can buy a K+DCAN cable for £12.50 on e-bay and will also need to download some free software, a widows laptop with usb and a standard battery charger or jump leads all of which I already have

Thought that it was worth taking a punt on as if I can get it to work I will approx £200 better off to spend on my Elgrand build and my grandson will get gifted a cable that he may well be able to use again in the future.

It also needs a bit of body work done on it as it has a minor scuff on the corner of the front bumper and one the same on the corner of the front bumper which although I have polished them out in a couple of places they have gone through the paint.

Never bothered before as she was helping my daughter out at her shop and was having to park in a public car park and so was likely to pick up more but will get them done prior to sale.

I have had the Logic7 amp arrive and looks all good and the K+DCAN cable is on the way.

I have downloaded and installed the BMW Standard Tools software and it is now sitting on my laptop ready for when the cable arrives.

Bit of work needed to get a decent download and to install on my Windows10 laptop as it is set to run in Windows nt4 or xp professional but a bit of playing around with settings on my laptop so it would recognise it and it installed perfectly

Wish I had known of this software before as it is full dealer and factory level software which does far more than than just the Logic7

Almost makes me think about keeping the 650i and selling the Q3 as I am certain I could sell it it for quite a bit more than it has cost me to import as the 650i is quite a fun drive and sounds so much nicer with it's V8 and the X pipes fitted by the previous owner than the little 1.4 turbo engine in the Q3.

It only has 89000 miles on it and over the years I have made a few other mods to it but 2 stupid cars is more than enough and I don't think that it would go down to well with my wife:D

Absolutely crazy but for a bit I fun I got a quote for it from webuyany car and they made me an offer of £1900 for it that I know that as soon as I took it in they would knock that down to about £1100 to £1200 max as they would use the mot avisories for shocks and tyres and the non working amp and the couple of small grazes on the front and rear bumpers to justify and then would then charge me a transaction fee for the priviledge of me letting them buy my car at a rip of price.

Right from years ago when they first started I have disliked this company due to there stupid adds which proclaimed We give you what your cars worth which they clearly do not and I think they take the mick out of unaware sellers always giving well below the lowest auction price that they can expect to get in the next days BCA (who is a sister company) auction as a quick flip.

Although I do know that one of my mates in Bristol who is a car dealer has often offloaded dodgy trade ins to them as there inspectors in the main have not got a clue and just follow there procedures to knock the price down

Had tried to include in with my previous post a list of what the BMW Standard Tools software will do but keep getting the opps but suffice to say it will do anything that a dealer can including quite a few for my 650i that I did not even know were possible

I have tried to just edit my previous post with this message but it will not allow me to even save this so have gave up :D

Bit of a update as although I have still not been able to do too much to my Elgrand I noticed a few days ago that the seller on ebay had reduced the Bassface Blackface SPL5C.1 speakers down to £27.50 from there original sale price of £50 which was already a very good price as there original price was £88.00

This got me thinking and so have decided to buy another pair as after listening to the Bassface BlackfaceSPL5C.1 component speakers that I have already got fitted in the tailgate zone over the last couple of days as they are running in have come to the conclusion that these are a lot nicer sounding speaker to my ears having both better bass and treble and a more punchy mid than the 5. 1/4 Boschmann JX-S553 3 way speakers that I was intending to fit in the rear doors and are also a more powerful and higher sensitivity speaker than the Boschman which are rated at 130 watts RMS per speaker and have sensitivity of 92db and if not already having the cut outs for the 6x9's I would also have bought another pair to replace these,

The Blackface are rated at 200 watts RMS per speaker and have a even higher sensitivity of 97db meaning that apart from sounding better to my ears will also go quite a lot louder than the 3 way Boschmans if wanted.

For the money and especially at the price they are now if you have a amp that is powerful enough to run them I would highly recommend them as to my ears they outperformed by quite some margin a pair of Rockford Fosgate P152-S Punch that I bought for a quite good price of £130 as they were open box which I then sold on as they did nothing for me and at less than quarter of the cost now of what Ipaid for the Rockfords and powered by the Infinity Reference 7541a 4 channel Amp the Blackface for me are a far better buy suiting my preferences better as I found them to be much smoother and warmer with a more punchy and deeper bass.

The Blackface also have a proper crossover with a 3 stage tweeter dip switch rather than just the simple inline crossover in the Rockfords

That's not to say that the Rockfords are not good speakers in the right system but are probably more suited to a lower powered head unit amp or lower powered warmer power amp rather than the Infinity which has a real world output of 120 to 130 watts per channel and is considered exceptionaly clean ultra bright, clinical and highly aggressive amp and the Rockfords were most likely the completley wrong choice to pair with it which after listening to them relised I had made a mistake as they just did not suit the Infinity.

it looks like I might have found the perfect speakers to match with it at a bargain price a with my preferences the Blackface work far better and now are a quarter of the price in the same way that I am hoping they will match the Shoc XL which from reviews I have read have aggressive, powerful, and transparent sound signature which similar to the Infinity in a lot of ways.

The living zone now has the potential to be nearly as loud as the tailgate zone with these and the 6x9 Boschman XLR-9949S 4 way speakers set in the rear camper units which are rated at 200 watts RMS per speaker and have a high sensitivity of 90db

I originally done a deal for 3 pairs of the Blackface with the seller and paid him £130 for the 3 pairs, 2 pairs for me for the tailgate zone and a pair for my grandson for his rear doors which I thought was a cracking deal for there specs but at £27.50 a pair these are crazy money now.

This means I am left with the 3 way Boschmans which I will gift them to my grandson as he needs a pair for his rear parcel shelf and these would work perfectly

The benefit of this for me is that not only do I end up with what to me are better sounding speakers but it has made me think that rather than fitting in the rear doors as this is quite difficult to do with components especially as the Blackface have proper full sized crossovers which idealy needs to be not too far from the mids and tweeter so possibly somewhere inside the door which is not ideal if they get wet that I would now fit them in the rear units.

This is a lot easier than running in speaker cable to the rear doors as all my runs will now be shorter and will now be inside the rear units. and will also mean that the speakers are now more at ear level rather than being lower down in the rear doors.

Although it has cost me a bit more for the speakers some of that cost will be offset slightly by not needing to buy 5 1/4 spacers for the rear doors and although I have already bought the sound deadening for the rear doors will use this on my grandsons build so will not go to waste.

Although they will be a bit further away from the driving zone when it is used in conjunction with the living zone I will use the DSP to compensate for the timing.

This also works as at present I have a circular popup 4 socket electric socket that is set vertically in the units into the cupboard that I want to house the Linksys EA8300 in and I intended to replace this with a flush fitting double socket to give room for the Linksky inside the cupboard so there was not a hole in the unit.

I can now just enlarge this cutout to take the Blackface mid woofer on that side and make a new cutout in the unit on the other side to take the other mid woofer,

The big downside to this change of plan is that I will not be able to showcase the Infinity amp as I intended as it was already very tight and now with the mid woofer and its enclosure from the living zone and also the a pair of mids one above the other from the tailgate zone plus enclosure plus sizable crossovers having to go in this cupboard now makes it impossible to do.

Will now have to fit this amp in the void above the cupboard where it will be hidden which in some ways is not the end of the world as this will make it a lot easier to fit than it would have been making it work as a feature in the cupboard below where I would have had to cut the units at the top and also maybe at the bottom to get it to fit. I can still use this cupboard for the Dilvpeotry R50 headphone amp and headphones as a bit of a feature and coupled with the easier fit of this amp with not fitting the speakers in the rear doors with the extra hassle of getting the speaker cable into them simplifies the build quite a bit and should also give me an improvement in sound quality and loudness if wanted for hardly any extra outlay.

Will now just leave the existing factory speakers in the rear doors but they will not be used for anything so now no need to even take the rear door cards off.

A couple of pictures of the Edge DBX 2 channel amp and the Boss Audio R1100M mono amps and the Vibe Slick 8 inch sub with it's custom 3d printed cover which I have not got round to putting up before which are already fitted from the previous build which are currently fitted in the rear camper bench seats and will be staying where they are in the new build although the Edge will be re-purposed to power the SPLX sub going in the tailgate zone in bridged mode.

Still not been able to do too much as regards fitting and wiring it all up but have now got it pretty much in my head how it is all going to work and how it is all going to fit in

Had a nice little break away from my Elgrand as went on a 90 mile road trip in my grandsons 182 cup with the Renult RS club around Exemore and had this stunning Clio V6 following us for a large part of the way

These are stupid money now and great to see it being used for what it was intended.

Clio V5.jpg

Really friendly club with some cracking cars and some very nice and knowledgeable members.

Good turn out with 26 cars taking part

I think I might have converted him to a Jap as he is talking about selling the RS Megane that he has not long bought as he prefers the clio and buying a Impreza WRX Bug eye to replace it.

I have had both and although the RS was fun the WRX is a step above in pure performance

Been looking for my solder and can't find it although it must be about somewhere so have bought some from Aliexspress

50/100/200/500G tin wire with flux melted rosin core solder roller, used for welding non clean electrical repair solder

Proper leaded solder with 37% lead

Not done to much to my Elgrand this week as since Combe have had a bit of a flare up with the gout I get but did get the Bassface 6.5 inch GT- FR635 3 way coaxial speakers in the front doors last week and used 27 of the 250mm x 180mm sound deadening sheets that I bought from Aliexpress, on the door panels.

Used the cheap speaker adapters which were also from Aliexspress and they fitted fine

Also got the Chord Rumour speaker cable run in from the speaker to where the factory cable enters the door ready to be joined to the run from the Alpine amp when it is fitted.

Although only running off my andriod unit in the dash at the moment they do make a noticeable improvement in sound quality over the factory speakers.

Even so I think I can do better for not too much more money and have bought a Kenwood KAC 525 2 channel amp from approx 1988 which although it has a few scuffs the seller says is fully working and even comes in it's original box.

Hoping that I can get this to fit in the centre consul between the front seats along with the Alpine 2 channel amp that I will be using for the door speakers.

Will also use the Chord Rumour from the Kenwood to the tweeters.

Paid £25 for it including postage

Was thinking of tiding it up a bit but on reflection have decided to leave it in its original state as I think it carries it's battle scares well for a amp that is nearly 40 years old.

Really like that it came in it's original box and may try to use the box within my hi-fi zone along with the valve headphone amp and headphones as a bit of a display point.

Only has 30 watts per channel RMS but this should be plenty to run the tweeters and will even then most likely need to turn the gains down quite a bit.

It has a Mosfet power supply and something that Kenwood calls Sigma Drive 11 technology which according to google is a proprietary Kenwood circuit design built to maintain a high damping factor, resulting in tighter, more accurate control over speaker cone movement plus it also has a ultra low THD of just 0.08% so hopefully should be perfect to run the tweeters,

Have decided that I am going to replace the Bassface 3 way coaxial speakers which possibly can be used on my grandsons build with a pair of Bassface GT-MB6/4 mid's and use the tweeters from the extra pair of Blackface 5.1/4's that I bought to go in the living zone and just use the mid's in this area along with the 6x9 4 way Boschman's as I think the tweeters will be better used in the driving zone.

These are silk dome tweeters so should match well with the Kenwood and the silver plated Chord Rumour cables,

Will run these in active controlled by the 8 channel PRV Audio DSP without the crossovers which I will either try to sell on or keep as spares just in case as these are the same as I am using on the Blackface 5.1/4's components in the tailgate zone

Total extra cost is about £50 for the Kenwood amp and Bassface mid's but I think this will give me a decent improvement in sound for not too much more money.

Probably a mistake buying the Bassface coaxial's but at £17 for the pair not the end of the world.

Should be getting the black carbon stainless bolts and gold stainless washers I have bought from Aliexpress in the next few days and should then be able to finish regluing and strengthening the joints on the SPLX sub box and get the grill fitted to it that I bought, and will also be adding some Polyester Fibrefill into the sub enclosure

Should look a lot tidier and should hopefully also not leak air.

Even with these extra spends total will still not that much over £1000 and have now gone to a 6 amp 16 speaker including the component tweeters 2 sub and 2320 watts set up with all Class A/B amps 2 of which are well over 30 years old and made in Japan which I love.
