Reverse light upgrade.

I'm assuming the bulb/holder comes with 3 wires.

1 x negative
1 x positive for fog light
1 x positive for reverse light.

The only other thing I thought about is reinstating the twin reverse lights and mounting a fog light elsewhere but I belive there are rules for the positioning of it in respect of passing an MOT.
I put dual colour led's in the reversing light position on my s1, and removed the under bumper foglamp.
2 Mot's and no probs.

I got mine from AliExpress. About 10 quid. Only used one fog light as I didn't want to add more wiring in the bus. The reverse lights are quite bright which aids the rear camera clarity at night
I found some on Ali express.

They appear to be a complete bulb and holder..was yours like that?

I've not had the rear cluster off to see what it's like in there...is it an incoming loom to a plug that feeds everything?

I'm guessing if that's the case I'll see where the reverse wire has been removed from and the incoming new wire for the fog?

Three wires like you say. You just need to find the old reverse wire, mine was very obvious, it was the only wire that was cut and taped. LED is in a rubber holder that you twist and push in the hole. Easier than the original I think.

I’ve put an eagle eye fog light in the recess .. I had the same problem not being able to see jack on the winters night when reversing.. changed both my reversing lights to brighter LEDs and change the settings in the rear camera .. can see clearly now in the darkness..View attachment 97177
Nice. I’m doing the same with three eagle eyes down there. How did you tap into power? Clip-in connect behind the reverse bulb?

Can you tell me the colour of the cut reverse wire? I'm trying to find mine, it's a right rat's nest

I think mine was black and white, can’t be sure as there was only 2mm left of it before the black tape started.

Hi, I bought a couple of led lights off ebay. I placed them behind a grill on rear bumper. Wired them up to my original reversing light. Not the best. But definite improvement. Put camera under rear bumper also. Fed it back under plastic interior trim.

I have a HWS and in the rear bumper there are 2 blanked off areas...one on either side.

I'm guessing they were possibly some type of lights on a different model and wondered if I could buy replacement to turn in extra reverse lights...or even one that could be adapted to fit there.

I commented on a recent rear camera thread and mentioned its piss poor in the dark and went on to ask if it was because one reverse light had been done away with for the fog light.

I was hoping to add extra lights and wondered if this was feasible.

Thanks in advance.
Hi I

Mine was red. But dealer I bought it off, had fit it replacing fog light.
Good point. Mine is a S3 so it maybe different for S1/S2 models.

Thanks to all. I managed to get a photo, and it is black/white to the reverse light. I have a camper conversion, so it's difficult to get in there and LEDs were retrofitted in Japan, so there are different coloured wires, resistors and diodes everywhere. Am I correct in thinking that in order to get the light cluster out, I only need to remove the 3 nuts from the inside?

I read that there is one or more under the bumper and there is a thread somewhere with photos.

I managed to find the disconnected reverse wire and get the new light working.
The wire out of the light is black and white but the wire into the connector from the loom, is red and white.
I managed to find the cut off end at the top close to the loom, after taking the bumper off and lights out. I stuck a 1.2m cob strip to the bumper, so it shines through the gap at the bottom of the door. It can't be seen when not in use and the door is closed.

Awesome, am looking to do something similar. Can you share daytime pics with the reverse lights off please and boot open? I’d love to see how you fitted it so as to hide it.

As you can see, it's not so invisible with the back door open. The bumper is aftermarket, so you may not have the same 10mm wide vertical surface to attach the COB LED strip. The second photo shows a strip of aluminium tape at the bottom of the door, which helps direct the light.

Ah yeah my bumper is different. Great idea though, and looks like it works well. Thanks for sharing the pics!

Can anyone suggest which brighter reversing bulbs I should go for?

Have a look through the thread, some good LED options with red and white in one bulb, other options for after market add-on lights too. One tip shared with me here was this: if you swap to an LED bulb they slip out of the bulb holder as they are a bit smaller, so use a dab of glue to hold it in place otherwise it will end up dropping in the bottom of the lens like two of mine (still in there) 🤣🤣

some good info on here - nice one chaps!

well, i didnt bother with upgraded reverse bulb - instead i have bought a LED light strip to give me more light when reversing.

i have some questions:

what is the route for the wiring from external to internal ? i need to get the wires into the light cluster - sometimes there is a gromit which needs popping out (ive just done it on my Suzuki actually for reverse camera)

also, is it black and white wire or red wire i need to splice into?

thanks all!
